About

I am Abi Naude, a South African artist working primarily in pen and ink, with watercolor as another important part of my artistic practice.

There is something uniquely captivating about drawing with ink. With no colour to hide behind, every line matters. Light, shadow, texture and atmosphere are built patiently through fine lines, hatching and cross-hatching. What begins as a blank sheet of paper gradually becomes a world filled with character and detail.

My drawings are inspired by the places, people, buildings, landscapes and memories that have shaped my life, particularly the distinctive beauty and nostalgia of Africa. I am drawn to old photographs, historic architecture, rural landscapes, wildlife and those fleeting moments that carry a sense of another time.

I enjoy the discipline of creating highly detailed drawings by hand. Each piece is built line by line, often requiring many hours of careful observation and patience. I strive to create artwork that invites the viewer to look closer and discover something new within the details.

Much of my work is about more than simply reproducing what I see. I want to capture the feeling behind an image.

My Memories of Africa series, for example, draws inspiration from photographs and places connected to Africa’s rich visual history. These works explore nostalgia, architecture and the atmosphere of a time that may otherwise exist only in memory.

Alongside my pen-and-ink work, I also create realistic watercolor paintings, allowing me to explore the softer language of colour, light and atmosphere.

Whether working in the precision of ink or the fluidity of watercolor, my goal remains the same: to create original artwork that tells a story and gives the viewer a reason to pause.

Each artwork is an original creation, drawn or painted by hand with care and attention to detail.

For me, art is not simply about making a beautiful picture. It is about preserving a moment, a place or a memory on paper.

I invite you to explore my collection and discover the stories behind the lines.
